Susan McKay was born on July 26, 1942 to Dick and Ethel Richardson in Los Angeles, California. For the first 10 years of her life she lived in Leimert, California, at the age of 10 the family moved to San Marino, then to Wyoming in 1966. From 1983-1986 she was a W.K. Kellogg National Fellow.
